About Us

Professional, Compassionate Care

Adoption-Related Psychological Assessments

Psychological assessments of prospective adoptive parents, referred by designated social workers when additional psychological evaluation is indicated. The assessment explores relevant psychological and psychosocial factors that may inform the adoption process, with a written report and recommendations provided to the referring social worker, where appropriate. The aim is to support informed decision-making and promote the best interests and well-being of the child.

In South Africa, adoption assessments form part of the statutory adoption process under the Children's Act 38 of 2005 and are conducted by designated adoption social workers, whose own assessments are usually sufficient. Where further psychological evaluation is indicated, the social worker may refer prospective parents to us.

We assess both single applicants and couples. This service is offered by Row-Anne Wright, Clinical Psychologist at RnR Psychology, as part of our psycho-legal services. We understand what adoption means to the families involved, and our approach is supportive and respectful throughout.

Practice Number: 1170910
Please note: Adoption assessments are by referral from a designated social worker. Our written report is provided to the referring social worker, and feedback on the findings is not given directly to the prospective parent(s). The court then decides whether to grant the adoption, taking into account both the social worker's and the psychologist's reports.
For designated adoption social workers: If you're considering a referral and would like to discuss whether a psychological assessment is indicated, please get in touch and we'll gladly advise.

The Process

How Adoption Assessments Work

1. Referral

The designated social worker refers the prospective adoptive parent(s) when additional psychological evaluation is indicated as part of the adoption process.

2. Assessment Sessions

The assessment typically involves 2–3 sessions with the single applicant or couple, exploring relevant psychological and psychosocial factors in a supportive setting.

3. Written Report

A written report with findings and recommendations, where warranted, is provided to the referring social worker to assist in the adoption process.
